During the Early Years (3-5 years), whether it’s their first tooth, or their visit to the dentist, a child’s early experiences of oral health can impact on the rest of their lives.
That’s why it’s so important to teach them about their mouths and introduce them to good habits as soon as possible. Early Years framework sets out the requirements for the learning, development and welfare of children from birth to the end of the academic year in which their fifth birthday occurs.
The overarching aim is to help young children achieve the five ‘Every Child Matters’ outcomes of staying safe, being healthy, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution, and achieving economic wellbeing. A basic teaching of oral hygiene practice is applicable within Physical Development Health and self-care.
“Children know the importance for good health and physical exercise, and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe. They manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs successfully, including dressing and going to the toilet independently.”
